What you should know about Patagonia
Patagonia grew out of climber Yvon Chouinard's equipment business and opened its first store, Great Pacific Iron Works, in Ventura, California, in 1973 – the company is still based there. Since 1985 it has given 1% of its sales to environmental groups, and in 2022 Chouinard transferred ownership to the Patagonia Purpose Trust and the nonprofit Holdfast Collective. patagonia.com is the US store; UK shoppers have a separate Patagonia store with prices in pounds.
Most reductions are concentrated in Web Specials, the online clearance section for past-season styles, where the selection and the sizes on offer change every few weeks. Reduced items carry the same Ironclad Guarantee as full-price ones. Patagonia is known for pushing back against overconsumption: in 2011 it ran a full-page “Don't Buy This Jacket” ad in The New York Times, and in 2016 it gave all of its Black Friday sales, about $10 million, to environmental groups.
Because Web Specials rotate and popular sizes sell through, a reduction on your colour and size may not last long. Patagonia makes many of its classics – the Better Sweater, the Nano Puff, the Synchilla Snap-T fleece – in several colours, and a reduction can apply to one colour while the others stay at full price. Set your alert on the exact product page and colour you want, and the email tells you as soon as that price drops.
