Best Buy began in 1966 as Sound of Music, a hi-fi store in St. Paul, Minnesota, and adopted its current name in 1983. Based in Richfield, Minnesota, it sells TVs, computers, phones, appliances and smart-home products in the US and Canada, along with Geek Squad services and its own Insignia brand. In August 2025 it launched Best Buy Marketplace, so bestbuy.com now also lists products from third-party sellers alongside the items Best Buy sells itself.

Prices at Best Buy move with manufacturer promotions, weekly deals and big events such as Black Friday. Returned and display units are resold as Open-Box items, graded by condition and usually priced below new. The free My Best Buy membership can be upgraded to the paid My Best Buy Plus and My Best Buy Total tiers, which add perks such as a longer return window. Price matching against certain major competitors exists, but Marketplace, open-box and clearance offers are generally excluded.

In electronics, timing is often tied to model years: when a new TV line, laptop generation or phone arrives, the outgoing model tends to be reduced – and then sells out. An alert on the exact model number and configuration (screen size, storage, color) tells you when that happens. On Marketplace listings, remember that the seller sets the price, which can change independently of Best Buy's own offers.
