What you should know about Adidas

adidas was founded in 1949 by Adolf “Adi” Dassler in Herzogenaurach, Germany, where it is still headquartered; its North American head office is in Portland, Oregon. Alongside running, football and training gear, the Originals classics are big sellers. In the US, adidas supplies kit to every Major League Soccer team, and in the UK it makes the shirts of clubs such as Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United. US and UK shoppers each have their own country store, with separate prices and promotions.

Reductions come through end-of-season sales, Black Friday and the sale section of the site. The free adiClub membership – you can sign up on the website or in the adidas or CONFIRMED app – gives members free shipping and returns, access to members-only products and points on purchases that unlock higher levels and rewards. Limited sneaker releases, on the other hand, run through CONFIRMED, which adidas launched in 2015 as the footwear industry's first reservation app.

Every colourway at adidas has its own article number and often its own price: a seasonal colour of a trainer can be reduced while the core black-and-white version stays at full price. Set your alert on exactly the colourway you want. Football shirts, whether Premier League or MLS, usually get cheaper once the next season's kit is out. When SaleAlarm's email arrives, check your size straight away, as reduced sizes tend to go quickly.

    Saving tips for Adidas

    • Classics like the Samba, Gazelle or Ultraboost come in many versions at different prices. Set alarms on a few variants – one of them is often reduced first.

    • Big retailers also sell adidas – JD Sports in the UK, Foot Locker or Dick's Sporting Goods in the US – and run their own promotions. A second alarm on the same model at one of them shows you where the price drops first.

    • Sign up for adiClub before you buy: it's free, and members get free shipping and returns, so a reduced item doesn't come with a delivery charge on top. Check the terms to see whether member offers can be combined with sale prices.
