Decathlon was founded in 1976 by Michel Leclercq, who opened his first store near Lille in northern France, and it designs much of what it sells under its own brands – Quechua, Domyos, Kipsta, Kiprun, Rockrider and others. It came to the UK in 1999 and sells there through its stores and decathlon.co.uk. The US is a different story: Decathlon closed its American stores in 2022 and now serves US customers online at decathlon.com.

Decathlon sets the prices of its own brands itself, and reductions come with end-of-season clearance, promotions and the arrival of new product generations. On decathlon.com, clearance and final-sale items can't be returned and don't count toward free shipping, large items such as bikes aren't covered by free returns, and orders ship only within the contiguous US. In the UK, the BuyBack scheme launched in 2023 gives store credit for used gear, which is then refurbished and resold.

A price alert pays off most for big purchases – a bike, a treadmill, a tent or a kayak – where even a small reduction adds up. Track the exact variant, because frame size, colour and shoe size can each have their own price and stock. And since clearance items on decathlon.com are final sale, check the size guide and specifications carefully before you snap up a reduced item.
