New Balance began in 1906 as the New Balance Arch Support Company, founded in the Boston area by Irish immigrant William J. Riley, and is still based in Boston. Unlike most big sportswear brands, it still makes shoes in the US, in New England factories, and in the UK, where its factory in Flimby, Cumbria, produces models for the European market. On the US site, members get free shipping and returns, early access to selected products and special promotions; the old myNB points scheme stopped awarding points at the end of 2021. Reductions show up in the sale section, at the end of a season and around Black Friday. Made in USA and Made in UK models, such as the 990 series, sit at the top of the price range, and the UK site runs its own promotions.

New Balance has sold shoes in different widths since 1960, when its Trackster became the first running shoe offered in varying widths. Many models still come in several widths, marked with letters such as D, 2E or 4E, and each width, size and colourway can have its own stock and price. Set your alert on the exact combination you wear – a reduction on the standard width doesn't automatically apply to the wide version.
