Zara was founded in 1975 by Amancio Ortega and Rosalía Mera in A Coruña, Spain, and is the flagship brand of the Inditex group. The US was one of its first foreign markets: after a first store abroad in Porto in 1988, Zara arrived in the United States in 1989 and started selling online there in 2011. US and UK shoppers each use their own country store on zara.com, with separate prices, delivery options and returns rules.
Zara brings in new designs constantly and in small batches and quickly pulls styles that don't sell, so permanent price cuts in the middle of a season are rare. Markdowns arrive with the summer and winter sales, and the Inditex brands, Zara included, also take part in Black Friday. Prices are set country by country, so a reduction in the UK store says nothing about the US store, and vice versa.
