Urban Outfitters grew out of a shop that Dick Hayne, Scott Belair and Judy Wicks opened opposite the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 1970, and it is still the namesake brand of the URBN group. It sells clothing, shoes, beauty, homewares and music – vinyl records have long been part of the mix – alongside its own labels such as BDG denim. In the UK, shoppers use urbanoutfitters.com/en-gb, run by URBN UK Ltd; the first London store opened on Kensington High Street in 1998.

Prices move through the sale section, which fills up at the end of each season, and through promotions on selected categories, such as multi-buy offers. In the US, the free UO Rewards programme collects stamps on purchases towards a reward and gives members early access to some products, sales and promotions; the European site has its own UO Rewards app. Some listings belong to UO MRKT, a curated marketplace whose items are sold and shipped by outside sellers, so their price and stock follow that seller.

Many Urban Outfitters pieces come in several colours, washes and sizes, and a markdown often reaches only some of them – another colourway of the same jeans can sit at a different price. If your size is sold out, some product pages offer a waitlist, but that only tells you an item is back, not that it's cheaper.
