Uniqlo is the main brand of Japan's Fast Retailing group and grew out of a single shop opened in Hiroshima in 1984. Its first stores outside Japan opened in London in 2001, and in 2024 it added its first Scottish store, on Princes Street in Edinburgh. In the US, Uniqlo opened its global flagship in SoHo, Manhattan, in 2006 and has since expanded to cities such as Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles and, from 2024, Houston and Dallas.

Uniqlo is less about fast-changing trends than about basics that return every season, often in improved versions – HEATTECH, developed with Toray, has been around since 2003 and AIRism since 2012. Prices come down through limited-time offers, end-of-season reductions and the sale section; in the US, app members also receive coupons and app promotions. Lines such as Uniqlo U, developed at the brand's Paris research centre since 2016, and the UT graphic T-shirts add designs that change from season to season.
