Tommy Hilfiger launched his first signature collection in New York in 1985 – updated button-down shirts, chinos and other preppy classics – with backing from textile entrepreneur Mohan Murjani. PVH Corp. bought the company in 2010, and the brand's head office is in Amsterdam. It sells under two labels, Tommy Hilfiger and Tommy Jeans, alongside Tommy Adaptive, clothing adapted for people with disabilities. US shoppers buy at usa.tommy.com, run by PVH; the UK has its own site, uk.tommy.com.

In the US, PVH's own stores sit mostly in premium outlet centres, and in-store offers – including deals for members of the free Hilfiger Club – often exclude usa.tommy.com, which has its own sale section and sitewide promotions. In the UK and much of Europe, the free loyalty programme is called Tommy Together: members collect points on purchases online and in participating stores and get perks such as early access to sales. UK outlet boutiques include one at Bicester Village near Oxford.

Polos, shirts, jeans and knitwear each come in many colours, fits and sizes, and sale prices often apply to only some of them.
