Levi Strauss & Co. dates back to 1853, when Levi Strauss opened a dry-goods business in San Francisco. In 1873 he and Reno tailor Jacob Davis received the patent for work trousers reinforced with copper rivets – the origin of blue jeans. The company is still headquartered in San Francisco and returned to the New York Stock Exchange in 2019. levi.com runs separate country stores, including the US and UK shops, while the European business is based in Brussels.

Every fit has a three-digit number: the 501 is the original, most other 500-series cuts are for men, and the 300, 700 and other series are for women. Each fit then comes in many washes, waist sizes and leg lengths, and a sale often reaches only some of them.
