Anthropologie opened its first store in 1992 in a refurbished car garage in Wayne, Pennsylvania – Urban Outfitters co-founder Dick Hayne created it for customers who had outgrown his first brand. Anthropologie.com followed in 1998, and today the brand has more than 200 stores. Its first European store opened on London's Regent Street in 2009, followed by one on King's Road, and UK shoppers order from the British version of the site.

Besides clothing, Anthropologie sells furniture, home décor and beauty, garden pieces from sister brand Terrain and bridal wear under Anthropologie Weddings. In the US, the free AnthroPerks programme gives members access to members-only promotions, first dibs on new arrivals and an extra discount in their birthday month. Reduced items are collected in a dedicated sale section, which grows noticeably at the end of each season.

Clothing at Anthropologie often comes in standard, petite and plus sizes, and a reduction may apply only to certain colours or size ranges.
