River Island traces its roots to 1948, when Bernard Lewis started selling fruit and vegetables from a market stall in Notting Hill before switching to womenswear. The business became Chelsea Girl in 1965 and took the River Island name in 1988. Still owned by the Lewis family and based in West London, it designs its women's, men's and kids' collections in-house. In the US it has sold through Nordstrom since 2021, alongside its own site.

riverisland.com is one site with a country selector; every order ships from the UK, and the US is among dozens of delivery destinations. River Island notes that orders to countries outside the EU may incur import duties or taxes on arrival, paid by the recipient. Discount codes go out via the newsletter, social media and site banners, and there are student and Blue Light Card discounts. In the UK, Unlimited Delivery is a 12-month pass that doesn't renew automatically.

River Island doesn't offer notifications when sold-out items return, so tracking a piece while it's still available is the safer route. Many styles come in several colours or washes, and a reduction may cover only some of them – put the alert on the exact version you want. River Island also warns that deliveries can take longer during sale periods, so order soon after the email if you need the piece by a certain date.
