Gap was founded in San Francisco in 1969 by Don and Doris Fisher and opened its first stores outside the US in London in 1987. In the US, Gap Inc. runs gap.com itself, sharing one checkout with sister brands Gap Factory, Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta. The UK works differently: after Gap closed its British stores in 2021, Next took over the UK website through a joint venture, and Gap now trades from a handful of standalone shops and concessions inside Next stores.

In the US, discounts come thick and fast: sitewide events such as Friends & Family, category promotions and a sale section, plus extra codes for cardholders. The free Encore membership collects points across Gap Inc.'s brands, which can be redeemed on later purchases or in the Encore Market, and members who reach the Premier tier can pick their own sale day once a year. On gap.co.uk, run by Next Retail, you can use free Click & Collect to hundreds of stores.

Because Gap layers its promotions – a percentage off the whole site one week, an extra code the next – the price on the product page and the price at checkout often differ. An alert tells you when the item's own price falls, which helps with denim and basics that come in many washes, lengths and sizes, where only some variants are reduced.
