Zappos started in 1999 when Nick Swinmurn launched ShoeSite.com; the name soon changed to Zappos, after "zapatos", Spanish for shoes. Tony Hsieh joined as co-CEO in 2001, and Amazon acquired the company in 2009 in a deal valued at about $1.2 billion when it closed. Based in the former Las Vegas City Hall, Zappos sells shoes, clothing, bags and accessories, including its Zappos Adaptive range. It ships only within the US, its territories and to military APO/FPO addresses, so UK customers can't order directly.
Zappos prices each colour and size of a shoe separately, so one colourway can be reduced while another stays at full price. Shipping is free, Zappos VIP members get free expedited shipping, and returns are free, although the return window is now shorter than the year-long one Zappos was once known for. Before you order, Zappos will match a lower price from a qualifying US retailer for the same brand, colour and size, but not from outlet, discount or auction sites, or coupons and sitewide promotions.
Zappos also offers a price guarantee: if it lowers the price of something you bought within the last ten calendar days, you can ask for the difference as long as the same brand, colour and size is still available. That makes an alert useful even after you've ordered. Set it on the exact colour and size you want, since each variant is priced on its own, and SaleAlarm emails you when that version gets cheaper.

Keep your alert running after you buy. If the price drops within ten calendar days, contact the Customer Loyalty Team by phone or chat and ask for a refund of the difference – discount codes and sitewide promotions launched after your purchase don't qualify.
If another qualifying US retailer is cheaper, ask Zappos to match before you place the order: existing orders aren't eligible. Zappos adds the competitor's standard shipping fee to the matched price, then ships for free.
