Oakley was started in 1975 by Jim Jannard in his garage with $300, selling motorcycle grips at motocross events; the name came from his English setter. Goggles followed, then the first sunglasses, the Factory Pilot Eyeshades, in 1984. Luxottica bought the company for $2.1 billion in 2007, and it is still based in Foothill Ranch, California.
