Michaels began in 1973, when Michael J. Dupey turned a Ben Franklin five-and-dime in Dallas into an arts and crafts store. Now based in Irving, Texas, and owned by Apollo Global Management since 2021, it runs well over a thousand stores in the US and Canada, plus Aaron Brothers Custom Framing inside its stores. Private brands include Artist's Loft, Loops & Threads, Recollections and Ashland, and in 2025 it expanded into party supplies and fabric after the closures at Party City and Jo-Ann. There are no UK stores.

Michaels Rewards lets members earn rewards on every purchase, up to 9% depending on qualifying spend over the past 12 months, plus VIP discounts; the Michaels Credit Card adds further perks. Weekly sales, coupons and seasonal markdowns shape most prices. On michaels.com, Michaels Marketplace adds third-party sellers of mass-produced supplies, while MakerPlace by Michaels lists handmade goods – both set their own prices, and items sold and shipped by third parties are excluded from rewards.

Crafting supplies come in endless variants: yarn by colour and weight, canvas by size, paint sets by count, artificial trees by height and style.
