Steam Price Tracker

Steam is Valve's digital store for PC games. Prices change with daily deals, publisher weekends and the big seasonal sales in summer and winter. SaleAlarm tracks the Steam game you want and emails you when it gets cheaper – alongside all your other price alerts.

What you should know about Steam

Steam is Valve's PC gaming platform. It launched in September 2003 as a client for updating Valve's own games and began distributing third-party titles in late 2005. Today the store sells games, DLC, soundtracks, software and bundles, and each developer or publisher sets its own price per currency – dollars in the US, pounds in the UK. UK prices already include VAT, while in the US sales tax is calculated and added on top at checkout where state law requires it.

Valve's discount rules shape when prices fall. A game can't be discounted in its first 30 days apart from an optional launch discount, nor for 30 days after a price increase, and two discounts must be at least 30 days apart. The only exception is the four seasonal sales: Spring in March, Summer from late June into July, Autumn in late November and Winter over Christmas and New Year. Daily Deals switch over at 10 a.m. Pacific, which is 1 p.m. Eastern and usually 6 p.m. in the UK.

Because of those cooldowns, a game often sits at full price for weeks and then drops suddenly in a publisher sale, a themed fest or a seasonal sale. SaleAlarm checks the price on the game's store page regularly and emails you when it falls. Many pages offer several packages – a standard edition, a deluxe edition, a bundle with the season pass – so make sure the price you're watching belongs to the version you actually want.

    When does Steam have sales?

These are the most important sale periods for Steam. Set your alarm a few weeks before – then you know the normal price and can recognise a real discount.

    Saving tips for Steam

    • Steam's own wishlist also notifies you about discounts. SaleAlarm is useful if you want to watch games together with products from other shops in one place.

    • Bought a game just before a sale started? Valve says it doesn't consider it abuse to refund a title purchased just before a sale and immediately rebuy it at the sale price. The usual limits still apply: request the refund within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime.

    • If you're after a deluxe edition, don't rely on Steam's wishlist emails alone: they are only triggered when a game's cheapest package is discounted, so a sale on the deluxe edition by itself sends no email. When your alert or a big sale arrives, check the deluxe purchase box on the store page as well.
