Sephora started in France: Dominique Mandonnaud founded his perfume chain in Limoges in 1969 and in 1993 merged it with Sephora, a Paris brand dating from 1970. Owned by LVMH since 1997, it sells hundreds of prestige brands alongside its own Sephora Collection. In the US it has had stores since 1998, sells online at sephora.com and runs shops inside Kohl's since 2021. In the UK, Sephora bought the online retailer Feelunique in 2021 and now operates sephora.co.uk and a small but growing number of stores.
In the US, prices revolve around the free Beauty Insider programme and its three tiers – Insider, VIB and Rouge. Members earn points on purchases, redeem them in the Rewards Bazaar and get a birthday gift, and the twice-yearly Savings Event gives each tier a discount across the store. Point Multiplier Events add bonus points in between. The UK business sets its own prices and promotions, so offers on sephora.co.uk don't mirror the US site.
A price alert pays off most for products you buy repeatedly or that cost a lot, such as fragrance, premium skincare and hair tools. Track the exact size you want: the 30 ml, 50 ml and 100 ml bottles of the same perfume each have their own price and aren't necessarily reduced at the same time.
