PetSmart was founded in 1986 by Jim and Janice Dougherty, who opened their first two stores in the Phoenix area in 1987 as PetFood Warehouse. Still headquartered in Phoenix, it has been privately owned since a consortium led by BC Partners bought it in 2015. Its stores in the US and Canada combine food and supplies with grooming, training, PetsHotel boarding and Doggie Day Camp; adoptions run through PetSmart Charities rather than sales of cats and dogs. PetSmart sold its UK chain in 1999 and has no UK stores.

Treats Rewards, PetSmart's free loyalty programme, gives points on purchases and services such as grooming and boarding, with bonus offers you activate in your account, Bestie and VIPP tiers, members-only in-store pricing and personalised deals. Autoship gives a discount on the first scheduled order, and you can choose same-day delivery, store pickup or shipping. Promotions rotate through brands and categories, and many PetSmart-exclusive brands have no direct equivalent elsewhere, which makes comparing prices harder.

Pet food is a repeat purchase, so small differences add up over a year. Set your alert on the exact formula, flavour and bag size – the 30-pound bag of a food is a separate product from the 15-pound one, and they don't always go on sale together.
