Lazada was founded in 2012 by Maximilian Bittner with backing from Rocket Internet, aiming to build an Amazon-style shop for Southeast Asia. It began operating in Singapore in May 2014 and is headquartered there; Alibaba took a controlling stake in 2016 and raised it the following year. Today Lazada runs marketplaces in six countries – Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam – combining its own retail business with third-party sellers.
In Singapore, Lazada also runs RedMart, the local online grocer it bought in 2016 and moved onto its platform in 2019, with scheduled delivery slots for groceries and household staples.
