Etsy launched in 2005 in Brooklyn, New York, where it is still based, and connects millions of independent sellers with buyers worldwide. It focuses on handmade items, vintage goods – which must be at least 20 years old – and craft supplies, from jewelry and wall art to furniture and wedding décor. Etsy doesn't stock products itself: each shop sets its own prices, shipping costs and policies. In 2026 it sold its resale app Depop to eBay to concentrate on its core marketplace.

Price changes on Etsy come from the sellers. A shop can put single listings or its whole range on sale for a set period, create coupon codes, or send targeted offers – for example a discount to shoppers who favorited an item or left it in their cart, if they've opted in to Etsy's marketing emails. Listings run for up to four months before they have to be renewed, so a price can also change when a seller relists an item.

Many Etsy items are one of a kind or made in small batches, so a listing can sell out or disappear for good – an alert works best on items that are made to order or have several in stock. Options matter, too: size, material or personalization often change the price, and a listing may show a starting price that only applies to the simplest version. Set the alarm on the listing you'd really buy and note which option you want.
