What you should know about AutoZone

AutoZone opened its first store on July 4, 1979, in Forrest City, Arkansas, under the name Auto Shack; founder J.R. "Pitt" Hyde III renamed it AutoZone in 1987 after losing a trademark dispute with Radio Shack. Based in Memphis, Tennessee, it is the largest US retailer of aftermarket car parts, with company-owned stores across the US, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Brazil. It sells its own Duralast and Valucraft lines alongside other brands. There are no AutoZone stores in the UK, and autozone.com is built for US drivers.

AutoZone has long positioned itself on everyday low prices, with promotions on top, such as seasonal deals and online offers. AutoZone Rewards is free to join, and qualifying purchases earn credits that turn into a reward for a later order. Many orders can be bought online and picked up in store. Stores also offer free services that can save you a purchase altogether, such as battery testing and charging, check-engine-light scanning and the Loan-A-Tool programme for specialty tools.

For a price alert, the key is the exact part: AutoZone lists parts by vehicle, and the same job – brake pads, a battery, a starter – often comes in several brands and quality tiers, from Valucraft to Duralast and Duralast Gold, each with its own price and warranty. Set the alert on the part number that fits your car, and SaleAlarm emails you when it drops. For maintenance items you buy regularly, like oil, filters or wiper blades, an alert helps you stock up at the right time.

    Saving tips for AutoZone

    • Car parts with the same specification are often offered by several brands at different prices. Compare carefully and track the right part number.

    • Before buying a specialty tool you'll only use once, ask about Loan-A-Tool: you leave a deposit, borrow the tool and get the deposit back when you return it.

    • If your car struggles to start, have the battery tested for free first. A weak charge or a corroded terminal can be fixed without a new battery – and if you do need one, you'll know the right size before you set an alert.
